In 1926, the Frankfurter Zeitung offered the famous Austrian writer and journalist Joseph Roth the opportunity to travel to Soviet Russia. Roth embarked on his journey in July 1926. His first reports are full of vivid impressions and are written... in the wake of his travels, but soon he turns to the topics that concern him. This book was translated at the First Volga Translation Residency, organized by the Center for Contemporary Culture "Smena" and the House of Creativity in Peredelkino. Translators from Kazan, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Minsk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg translated essays by Joseph Roth in the summer of 2023 at the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan and on the island-city of Sviyazhsk.
