Before Adam

The hero of Jack London's story "Before Adam" is a well-educated man, a contemporary of the author. He suffers from a split personality - he has been having dreams since childhood in which he is transported to prehistoric times, to... primitive people who have not yet learned to speak and have not shed their fur. Every night he dreamt of the continuation of the previous dream - nature, hunting, relationships with other half-human, half-ape tribes. These visions frightened the hero, and only as he grew up did he manage to reconstruct the life of his alter ego from fragments of dreams.
