Duel

Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin devoted several years of his life to military service on the southwestern border of Russia, which gave him the opportunity to write such a vivid, emotional, and truthful work as "Duel". 
At the center of the narrative is... the fate of a young Russian officer, Georgy Romashov, a man capable of feeling, empathizing, and understanding others. In the stuffy, cramped world of a provincial garrison, the sub-lieutenant finds himself caught in a whirlpool of complex and harsh human relationships. Romashov's inquiring mind, his unwillingness to come to terms with practically unbearable living conditions, and his infatuation with the married young woman Shurochka gradually reveal the best qualities of the hero - strong will and loyalty to spiritual values - but the circumstances lead him to a sad ending. 
Illustrations by David Dubinsky subtly convey the psychological tension of the events reflected in the work.
