The Road of Joy and Tears

In 1940, torrential rains broke the dam on the Takasigi River in North Carolina. Fourteen-year-old Wallis Ann Stamper and her family miraculously survived the flood, but their misfortunes were not over: since their home was completely destroyed, they were left... without means of livelihood. Wallis Ann takes on the care of her little brother Seth and her older sister Lacey, who is unable to speak, although she has the rare gift of reproducing any music from memory. Unable to establish a household, the Stamper family begins to wander from place to place in search of food... Thanks to Lacey's talent, they manage to join a traveling circus, but new misfortunes await them there. However, despite everything, Wallis Ann does not lose her will to live… Will she find love and freedom?
