Pavel Dmitrievich Bryantsev taught history for several years at one of the secondary educational institutions and noticed how attentively the students listened to explanations of those sections of Russian history that relate to Lithuania and its relations with Poland and... Russia. Given the interest in this topic and the lack of necessary sources, Bryantsov decided to write the history of the Lithuanian state himself. He worked on this composition for seven years: reviewed numerous sources and aids, selected only the most important and significant events from them, and combined them into a single overall picture of the history of the Lithuanian state.
