Nadezhda Alexandrovna Teffi (real surname Lokhvitskaya) was a true literary star in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Her sharp mind, elegant style, ability to see the bright sides of life, and share her observations with the reader... made her works literally beloved by the public.
But as is often the case with masters of ironic prose, Teffi's laughter was mixed with tears. This is especially noticeable in the writer's memories — about the old, forever departed Russia, about the Civil War, about the forced path into emigration, about friends and acquaintances from among the creative intelligentsia and their emotional turmoil and difficult choices of their fate in revolutionary Russia...
