The original classification by Oliver Hogg, the author of this book, is based on the theory of motivated aggression manifested by humans throughout historical development. He examines types of personal weapons (swords, spears, clubs, bows), armors (chain mail, tunics, helmets),... types of war machines (catapults, crossbows, howitzers), various types of cannons, ships (biremes, triremes, etc.), and different kinds of explosives (initiating, propulsive, brisant). Hogg describes the military organizations of the Ancient World: Egyptian militia units, the 'royal regiment' of Assyria, the navy of Carthage, Greek phalanxes, and the legions of Rome - one of the best armies in the world. The book includes a large number of rare illustrations.
