"Dead Souls" is a cult poem by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809–1852), combining elements of satire and deep philosophical reflection on the fate of Russia. The main character, Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, embarks on an adventurous enterprise — the purchase of dead... peasants from landlords, which allows him to become rich on paper. Each of the characters personifies various vices of society. The idle dreamer Manilov, the brazen and unprincipled Nozdryov, the rude and cruel Sobakevich, the narrow-minded and obstinate Korobochka, the miserly and suspicious Plyushkin.
