"Cthulhu. Death May Die" is a dynamic cooperative game set in the Lovecraftian mythos, which is quite different from other representatives of the genre. You will be transported to the 1920s, becoming brave and somewhat crazy detectives who instead of...
a regular investigation decide to battle the Ancient itself! To win, you will need to prepare properly.
The game includes six different scenarios and two Ancients that you can challenge: Hastur, the King in Yellow, and of course, Cthulhu! Each scenario offers an original adventure that can be played with any Ancient. Thus, you get twelve unique combinations: the scenario sets its own game board (which is modular), contains a description of a specific ritual that needs to be interrupted, as well as its consequences; a description of two additional actions for the detectives; and includes a set of find, Myth cards, etc. The Ancients differ in the cultists and monsters that the detectives will face; their power and characteristics.
In addition to this variety, the game offers a dozen detectives, each of whom has unique traits and characteristics of fatigue, health, and sanity. During the game, detectives can improve their skills, and the more experienced the detective, the closer they are to complete loss of sanity! It is also worth noting the quality of the components, especially the game miniatures – such a Cthulhu on the board is truly intimidating!
How to play?
After choosing a character, scenario, and Ancient, players embark on their journey. On their turn, a player goes through four phases:Action Phase – the player can perform three actions out of six available (two unique to the scenario). Actions can be repeated, and the basic ones are running, attacking, resting, and trading.
Dread Card Draw – in this phase, the Ancient approaches our world, enemies appear and move, etc. No detective likes this phase!
Investigation or Combat – in this phase, you either take a card from the find deck, which advances you in the story, or if you are in a location with an enemy, you fight it.
End of Turn.
For the combat portion of the game and for checks, dice are used, on the faces of which there are various symbols. You can roll success, failure, and other values. This mechanic is closely related to another one – the deeper the detective sinks into their madness, the more additional dice they roll. There is strength in madness! Who won?
Players win when they destroy the Ancient by dealing the required damage to it, and lose in cases where: one of the detectives died or went insane before the Ancient is summoned; all detectives die or go insane in combat with the Ancient; the despair token reaches the last division on the summoning track. Game duration: from 90 to 120 minutes.Number of players: from 1 to 5.
