of the Andersen Prize.
9 AD somewhere in Germany: Roman commander Lucius Quinctilius Varus with three legions was caught off guard and defeated by Germanic tribes led by Arminius. The Roman eagles fell into the hands of the barbarian Germans. The battle in the Teutoburg Forest put a limit on Roman conquests beyond the Rhine and for a long time became a symbol of the struggle for independence of the Germanic lands. Almost 2000 years later, an amateur archaeologist discovers the remnants of a vast battlefield from Roman times. Is this really the site of the famous battle?
The author discusses the work of the archaeologist and historian, the book examines both the knowledge accumulated by traditional historiography and the latest discoveries in this field. Wolfgang Korn's book not only tells of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest but also addresses the history of Ancient Rome at the turn of our era: what do we know about it and where does this knowledge come from?
