Every person contributes to the history of their country in their own way. But there are people who stand apart in the national gallery of heroes. It is to these outstanding individuals - Russian pioneers, navigators, military leaders, travelers -...
that the "Historical Comic" series is dedicated.
The first book in the series - about Vitus Bering, an officer of the Russian Navy and navigator - was conceived, written, and illustrated by Vladislav Serov, an artist and sculptor from St. Petersburg.
Having studied a vast amount of historical materials, he created a realistic, captivating graphic novel where both the content and the artwork are equally strong and complement each other. It resulted in a beautifully illustrated layered narrative about bright heroes and ordinary people, poignant solitude, and the joy of discovery. This is not just a clear and colorful account of a great event, but a full-fledged exploration and a useful addition to school history and geography textbooks.
What is the book about? Vitus Bering led the Great Northern Expedition, which resulted in the creation of navigational maps of the northern and eastern coasts of Russia, opened routes to America and Japan, discovered numerous islands, and described the nature and way of life of the local population.
Bering himself reached the shores of America on the packet boat "Saint Peter." This voyage became a true feat of Russian navigators. The goals set were achieved, but the price for these discoveries was steep - human lives, including that of Captain-Commander Vitus Bering himself.
Thanks to Russian navigators, modern Russia became a great power. The colossal legacy of the Great Northern Expedition is still in demand today.
At the end of the book, the reader will find a well-written afterword by the writer Oleg Bundur. It will help to deepen the understanding and feel of the era and to properly appreciate the hero's feat. Expressive maps are placed on the front and back endpapers. The front endpaper traces the routes of all the expedition's units, while the back lists the names of the heroes immortalized at geographical points in our country.
The book is recommended for younger school-age children, as well as for all lovers of comics, heroic biographies, travel, and adventures.
