At that time, he went on a trip... to the Orenburg and Kazan provinces, where Pugachev's uprising was unfolding. Initially, the main character of the narrative was supposed to side with the rebels and take an active part in the battles according to the author's idea. But gradually, the plan for the story changed and eventually took the form we know.
