Imagine: you are on vacation in Karelia. It is beautifully enchanting here. But who would have thought that among these forests and lakes, completely different laws reign than in our normal life? That here you can still meet characters from...
old legends? And that the enchanted island can change you forever?
In "Lempo Island," Vallu Kananen, a modern family with three children arrives to relax in the picturesque northern region. And the next day the children disappear...
Vallu Kananen is a historian, folklorist, and local historian. He was born on the Karelian Isthmus, at the border of Russia and Finland, and spent his childhood in his grandfather's house — an Ingrian Finn. Vallu's great-grandmother was a storyteller. From her, Vallu heard the runes of the Kalevala, Finnish renditions of the Elder Edda, and Ingrian tales, both wonderful and frightening, from an early age. Vallu Kananen still lives in these areas today. He is welcoming to tourists who paddle past his house on the Wolf and Vuoksa rivers, and only prohibits one thing: photographing him and filming videos.
