"Gitanjali" is a collection of poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize, specifically the Nobel Prize in Literature, primarily for the English "Gitanjali." The English "Gitanjali" became very... well-known in the West and was widely translated. The word gitanjali consists of "git," meaning song, and "anjali," meaning offering, and thus means "offering of songs"; however, the word referring to offering, anjali, has a strong religious connotation, so the title can also be interpreted as "prayer offering of a song."
