Karolina Pavlova lived almost a hundred years – born in the early 19th century to a family of Russified Germans, Pavlova became a notable figure in the literature of that era. Her constant companions were the best poets of her... generation – Pushkin, Baratynsky, Yazykov, Mickiewicz. Pavlova's poems, published in well-known magazines, should be regarded alongside the works of recognized classics of domestic poetry. The energy of her poems, endowed with a hypnotic intonation and unusual imagery, can be compared to the texts of Emily Dickinson – the younger American contemporary of Pavlova, who created in seclusion. Unlike Dickinson, Pavlova was known during her lifetime but remained in the shadows of her era, only occasionally appearing in dedications and letters from more celebrated contemporaries. There is no doubt that now is the time to rediscover her work.
