Carmen

The works of Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) belong to the most brilliant pages in the history of French literature of the 19th century. Starting as a romantic, the writer closely approached critical realism, preparing the ground for such outstanding realist masters... as Flaubert, Maupassant, and Anatole France.
The literary legacy of Mérimée is quite extensive: the historical novel "Chronicle of the Reign of Charles IX", a collection of plays "The Theater of Clara Gazul", travel notes, and of course, novellas.
The novella "Carmen", presented for the attention of readers, is undoubtedly one of the most famous. The tragic love story of the Basque José and the free-spirited gypsy Carmen has inspired numerous artistic works - primarily the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet.
