Discovered within a manuscript collection by A. I. Musin-Pushkin and published in 1800, the "Tale", according to poet A. N. Maikov, "made an epoch in our literary world." It attracted the attention of not only researchers but also poets, artists, and musicians. The "Tale" became the subject of numerous poetic translations and adaptations, the best of which are included in this edition.
