Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov in his work explores large national characters. What makes a Russian person alive, what is God's law, what is the nature of good and evil, sin and righteousness - these are the questions that concern the author.... In the 1880s, Leskov turns to the plots and motifs of the ancient Russian hagiographic collection "Prologue", from which an entire direction in the author's work grows, which includes nine Christian legends published in this edition. The ethical questions raised by Leskov continue to resonate with readers to this day. Thanks to the deep development of characters and the diversity of the language palette, the cycle of legends occupies a deserved place among the masterpieces of Russian literature on Christian themes.
