George Francis Dow, a historian and antiquarian, author of many books about America's past, believes that there were no darker pages in maritime history than those recounting the voyages of slave ships. All sea vessels with holds packed with black... slaves, captured during tribal wars or kidnapped during peacetime, were headed from the shores of the Gulf of Guinea to the West Indies and to the American colonies that became the United States, where the unfortunate were sold or exchanged for various goods. The book contains memoirs of ship's doctors, captains, and passengers, as well as written reports for parliamentary commissions investigating the slave trade, and describes its commercial structure. The narrative is accompanied by more than 50 engravings and other illustrations.
