All works by Jack London included in this collection are united by a maritime theme. The sea occupied an important place in the writer's life. In his youth, he purchased a small used schooner, began illegally harvesting oysters in San Francisco Bay, and quickly became a kind of leader of the local “oyster pirates.” Soon the authorities managed to lure London to their side, and he began to catch his former companions with no less enthusiasm. London reflected his impressions of this period of life in “Tales of a Fishing Patrol.” In 1893, Jack hired himself as a sailor on a fishing schooner that sailed to the shores of Japan to catch fur seals. The acquired experience of harsh sea life later helped London when working on the novel The Sea Wolf. It is curious that London’s literary career began with the essay “Typhoon off the Coast of Japan,” which was dedicated to events at sea. The sea element attracted the writer throughout his life. In 1906, London, already a recognized writer, began building the sailing ship Snark according to his own drawings. He intended to use it to circumnavigate the world. The voyage lasted two years, and London, as often happened in his life, again poured his new impressions into another book.
