Isai Kalashnikov, a native of a Buryat village, which after the church reform of the 18th century was settled by Old Believers - Semeiskie, became known throughout the country after the publication of the epic novel “The Cruel Age” (1978),... which tells the story of the life of Genghis Khan. In his other novel, “Rupture-Grass” (1970), the writer also turns to history, but to a history that is closer and more personal. In the center of the story is the life of an Old Believer Semey village in the first half of the 20th century - forty years, equal to the number of shocks that befell contemporaries, an entire era. The same theme is raised in the last novel by Isai Kalashnikov, first published after his death in 1999 - and again the writer masterfully captivates the reader in the vicissitudes of the lives of his heroes, proving that in history there are no such things as big and small, that the measure of everything is man and his place in the world.
