Anna Andreyevna Akhmatova 1889–1966 – the greatest poet of the 20th century, translator and literary scholar. She is considered the most outstanding poetess of the Silver Age. Akhmatova regarded poets I.F. Annensky and A.S. Pushkin as her teachers. Throughout her... long life, Anna Akhmatova experienced two revolutions and two world wars, and learned firsthand what Stalinist repression and the death of her closest people were like. One of Akhmatova's most significant works is Requiem 1934–1963, which was initially written as a lyrical cycle but was renamed a poem during the writing process. The poems from the cycle were published only in samizdat and abroad during her lifetime. In Russia, the complete text of Requiem was first published only in 1987. In addition to the poem, this collection includes significant poems by the poetess from the collections Rosary 1914, White Flock 1917, Plantain 1921, Anno Domini MCMXXI 1923, Reed 1930, as well as poems that were not included in the author's separate books. Due to the fact that since the 1930s Anna Akhmatova faced criticism, silence, persecution, and strict censorship, many of her works were not published in her homeland even decades after the author's death. In 1965 and 1966, Akhmatova was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
