Whoever reads the "Harivamsha Purana" from beginning to end receives the darshan of Lord Vishnu. Just by reading the "Harivamsha" once, a person is freed from all sins committed in the three previous lives. O descendant of Bharata, only due... to past righteous activities does a person develop the desire to listen to and read the "Harivamsha Purana". The great sage Shree Vyasadeva, having taken the essence from all the Puranas, Vedas, and Smriti scriptures, composed the "Harivamsha". The "Harivamsha Purana" was narrated after the great historical work "Mahabharata" and is its natural supplement. The "Harivamsha" describes the pastimes of the Supreme Lord from His very birth, as well as the pastimes before and after the battle of Kurukshetra, including His departure from this world. The book is divided into three parts: "Harivamsha Parva", "Vishnu Parva", and "Bhavishya Parva". "Harivamsha Parva" consists of 55 chapters, "Vishnu Parva" has 128 chapters, and "Bhavishya Parva" contains 135 chapters. The entire "Harivamsha Purana" comprises 16,000 verses. It was narrated by the great sage Vaishampayana to King Janamejaya. In that assembly, Ugrasrava Suta was present. Later, while answering the questions of the sages in Naimisharanya, headed by Shaunaka, Suta recited the entire "Harivamsha". Many acharyas of Gaudiya Vaishnavism cite stories from this work in their significant writings. The reader of the book will find extremely interesting and captivating stories that enrich his mind and spiritual consciousness with divine knowledge. The "Harivamsha Purana" was narrated after the "Mahabharata" by the sage Vaishampayana, a disciple of Vyasadeva, to King Janamejaya when the latter asked why the sage had said so little about Krishna and His deeds. Then Vaishampayana began to narrate the story of Krishna's birth, His childhood pastimes in Vrindavana, and His pastimes in Mathura and Dvaraka. Notably, he describes these pastimes in a unique mood with details that are not found in other Vedic texts. Therefore, the "Harivamsha" exudes a distinct aroma of Krishna's deeds that is unique to it. The "Harivamsha Purana" narrates the exploits of Krishna, and thus the acharyas classify this work among the literature that reveals the science of God, the nature of the Lord, His pastimes, and pure devotional service. Therefore, by reading the "Harivamsha", a person cleanses the heart and awakens the dormant love for God within himself, developing attachment to Him. The exploits of Krishna surpass the exploits of the greatest heroes of this world, be it Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Marcus Aurelius, Kamsa, Hiranyakashipu, Ravana, or even Indra. His deeds astonish, amaze, and bewilder even Brahma and Shiva, not to mention ordinary living beings.
