Once, Olivia Karemera's life was divided into "before" and "after". "Before" - sunny mornings in a large house in Gitarm, the brightness and novelty of each day, delicious food that sometimes burned on her tongue. "After" - a dull sun... year-round, an endless sameness of dormitory walls and almost tasteless, but nutritious food. "Before" - the most beautiful mom, a smart and kind dad who is a doctor, and a beloved older brother. "After" - loneliness in plain sight and a burden of memories. Memory repeatedly brings Olivia back to that year when hatred, nurtured for years, spilled into the streets of her homeland in the African country of Rwanda. To live on in the present, Olivia has to confront the past face to face in the pages of her personal diary... and in life, when a new student arrives at the boarding school.
