Publius Vergilius Maro is a Roman poet whose work helped shape Roman identity.
In his poem "Aeneid," Virgil tells the story of the son of a Trojan prince and the goddess Venus, whose descendants, Romulus and Remus, are destined to found...
Rome. Meanwhile, Aeneas, like Odysseus, wanders with his companions through the world, escaping from the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis, battling harpies, one-eyed cyclopes, and descending into the realm of the dead. The second part of the "Aeneid" is largely comparable to Homer's "Iliad." Aeneas arrives in Italy, as fate has decreed, and engages in long wars with local tribes.
The collection also includes a cycle of poems called "Bucolics." In them, Virgil depicts scenes of idyllic life in nature and the serene life of shepherds. This utopian world contrasts with the war raging in the real world.
In the poem "Georgics," each book is dedicated to a specific type of agriculture: the first to plowing, the second to gardening, the third to livestock, and the fourth to beekeeping.
The introductory article for this edition was written by Tatiana Borisovna Gvozdeva, associate professor of the Department of Foreign Literature at the Gorky Literary Institute, PhD in Historical Sciences.
The book "Aeneid. Bucolics. Georgics" is suitable for students of philology and theater schools, as well as for those who want to begin studying literature independently. Thanks to its hardcover, the book is convenient to take with you and make notes in it.
