Must Stay Alive

The story by Lyudmila Nikolaevna tells about several days in the life of a girl named Maya. But what days they are! Winter of 1941, in besieged Leningrad, where cold, hunger, death, and treachery reign. And Maya is only 11... years old, remaining a child even in this monstrous time. Lyudmila Nikolaevna, who herself endured the blockade, writes above all about life, no matter how terrible it may be. Maya argues with her mother, laughs with the neighbor's boy, warms up a homeless kitten, cares for her neighbors, and continues to live with all her might.
Illustrations by Liza Bukhalova connect Maya's besieged reality with her dreams of peaceful life and give hope that the hardest trials will pass, giving way to childhood.
