When the Earth's space colonies lost contact with their home planet, they had to survive without any support. The process of terraforming turned out to be too difficult and prolonged, and humans changed themselves through cybernetics and genetic modifications. When... the descendants of the first colonists finally established a fragile equilibrium with the surrounding hostile worlds, it turned out that Earth had not perished. And now the civilization resurrected from the ruins wants to reclaim the colonies for itself, exterminating all "mutants" in the process. Thus begins the first interstellar war, dirty, dangerous, and horrifically expensive. In the midst of the war, humans encounter an alien and foreign intellect, emotionless and all-powerful, whose motives are unknowable and whose capabilities are endless. It is only by chance that the first contact with it is made by a rober, a human specially bred to manage the most complex technical systems, whose psychology and way of thinking sometimes differ greatly from the usual. Soon humans will realize that they know nothing about the true secrets of the cosmos and that some secrets will come at a very high price.
