In the early 20th century, the pioneer of domestic color photography S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky mastered a unique method that allowed him to capture images of the era in natural colors without colored emulsions. With his camera, he traveled through a... system of locks from the interior regions of Finland to the suburban dachas of St. Petersburg. He spent a spring day on the shores of Lake Lugano in Switzerland, visited Venice, Milan, the ruins of Pompeii, the shores of Lake Garda, and the island of Capri. In the south of France, his camera captured Russian street names in the city of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Later, he traveled to Denmark, where at the personal request of Empress Maria Feodorovna, he took several photographs of palaces and parks associated with the beginning of her love with the future Emperor Alexander III. The last stop was the part of Turkey that was part of the Russian Empire, which soon was to become the scene of a great tragedy in 1915.
