Kir Bulychev (1934–2003) — Soviet and Russian writer, translator, screenwriter, and playwright, Doctor of Historical Sciences. The writer's real name is Igor Vsevolodovich Mojeiko. His creative pseudonym is a result of combining the name of the author's wife, Kira Soshinskaya,...
and the maiden name of his mother, Maria Bulycheva. In 1957, he graduated from the Maurice Thorez Moscow State Institute of Foreign Languages, and in 1962, he completed his postgraduate studies. Since 1963, the writer began working at the Institute of Oriental Studies. He wrote historical-geographical essays for journals, engaged in translations, and defended his candidate, and later doctoral, dissertations. In academic circles, Igor Mojeiko was known for his publications on the history of Southeast Asia. Bulychev's literary activity was diverse: he wrote scientific works, journalistic articles, and artistic creations. He especially had a penchant for creating cycles of works united by common characters, locations, or themes. These include series about the peculiar city of Veliky Guslyar, about Dr. Vladislav Pavlysh, a cosmic doctor, about the agent of the Intergalactic Police Kore Orvat, and of course, about the resourceful girl from the future — Alice.
"The Adventures of Alice" is a cycle of the most famous works of Bulychev. The main character of the captivating novellas and stories is schoolgirl Alice Selezneva — a brave and curious girl, around whom incredible events unfold; she travels through time and explores the farthest corners of the Universe. Alice is modeled after the writer's daughter. Bulychev continued to write amazing stories about the girl from the future for many years. He sought to make children's literature interesting for a new generation of children growing up in the conditions of scientific and technological progress. Bulychev's works were immensely popular even during his lifetime; they remain popular to this day. More than twenty film adaptations have been made based on them, most of which Bulychev himself wrote the scripts for.
This edition is already the fifth collection of his works about the extraordinary traveler in the "Library of World Literature" series. The book includes ten novellas: "The Queen of Pirates on the Planet of Tales", "Alice and the Snow Maiden", "Alice on the Planet of Mysteries", "Alice and the Dragon", "The Closet of Bluebeard", "The Secret of the Black Stone", "Alice and the Pretenders", "Alice on the Living Planet", "Star Dog", and "Vampire Half-Dusk". The wonderful illustrations for the texts of this edition were created by the talented Russian artist Dmitry Nikulushkin.
