Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko was called the "conscience of the era" by his contemporaries. His popularity was incredibly high. Some were attracted by the writer's ability for compassion and love, others by his optimism and belief that a person's actions are... guided by a striving for justice. Korolenko entered the history of literature primarily as the author of numerous novellas and stories that formed a peculiar chronicle of Russian life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
