Homer laid the foundations of world literature and all the diversity of its genres. His “Iliad” and “Odyssey” are not only monuments of ancient culture, but also a rich source of information about the world and human nature. The Iliad... tells the story of one of the turning points in the history of Ancient Greece, the ten-year siege of Troy, a war started in the name of love. Here legends about gods and heroes, myths and true events are closely intertwined. The text of the world-famous poem, which stands at the origins of the European literary tradition, is given in the famous translation by N.I. Gnedich, who managed to convey the “simplicity, strength and important calm” of Homer’s language.
