1000 kilometers until dawn

The book presents a story about perhaps the most extreme journey in the modern history of mankind - the conquest of the North Pole during the polar night. In December 2007 - March 2008, two Russian travelers - Matvey Shparo... and Boris Smolin - walked 1000 kilometers from the mainland to the pole at the limit of human capabilities: in pitch darkness and hellish cold, expecting that every night an abyss might open up under their tent.
Quoting diaries and recordings of telephone conversations, the author of the book, Dmitry Shparo, creates an effect of presence, which ensures incredible dynamism of the narrative. At the same time, he does not smooth out the rough edges, openly talks about the “wrong side” of the journey - about mutual grievances, mistakes and inconsistencies that accompany the organization of any significant project.
The second part of the book is devoted to no less amazing events - nine Russian youth expeditions to the North Pole led by Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin, the first of which took place in 2008, and the last in 2016. The book is intended for a wide range of readers.
Dmitry Shparo is a famous Soviet and Russian traveler and writer, leader of the expedition that was the first in the world to reach the North Pole on skis. This achievement of Dmitry Shparo was included in the London Guinness Book of Records, and in the USSR he was awarded the highest award - the Order of Lenin. In 1988, a Soviet-Canadian expedition led by D.I. Shparo crossed the Arctic Ocean on skis along the route: USSR - North Pole - Canada. For this transition, D.I. Shparo was awarded the second most important Soviet Order of the Red Banner of Labor, as well as the prestigious UNESCO Fair Game prize.
