Poland, Warsaw, 1930s. The air is filled with anxious premonitions of a global catastrophe. Aaron Greidinger is a young writer, the son of a rabbi, leading a bohemian lifestyle. Confused by romantic relationships and creative failures, he attempts to write... a mystical play and, together with other Warsaw Jews, awaits the inevitable end of the world. One spring day, walking through the impoverished Jewish neighborhoods of his childhood, he decides to visit the house where his first love lived, whom he hasn't seen for twenty years. It turns out that Shosha had been waiting for him all these years and, as if by magic, preserved her former appearance of a simple-hearted girl… After the publication of the English version of the novel in 1978, I. B. Singer was awarded the Nobel Prize for "emotional artistry of narration." Initially, the text was published in Yiddish under the title "Expeditions of the Soul," but during the translation into English, it was significantly altered and revised by the author, who insisted that translations into other languages be based on the English version. In this edition, the novel "Shosha" is presented in the classic translation from English by Nina Brumberg.
