Annie Besant is primarily known as the first student and follower of Helena Blavatsky. At the same time, she combined her activities in the Theosophical Society with an active fight for the rights of the poor and women, participation in... the political movement for India's independence, and the founding of Masonic lodges in different parts of the British Empire. Her acquaintance with Helena Blavatsky's "Secret Doctrine," and later with its author, determined Annie Besant's fate. Another milestone in her development as a theosophist was her collaboration with Charles Leadbeater.
